Dental Public Health

Dental Public Health is the branch and specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and control of dental disease and the promotion of dental health through organized community efforts. Dental Public Health serves the community rather than the individual, through research, health promotion and education and through group dental care programs.

What is a Public Health Dentist?

A Public Health Dentist is a Dental Specialist who has successfully completed formal advanced education in dental public health and holds such specialty designation from the Alberta Dental Association and College.

Why is this important to you?

Dental health is often underestimated in its importance and relation to overall health. Public Health Dentists help to educate communities and groups by increasing knowledge about dentistry and dental diseases. This education translates to individual knowledge and improves the understanding of the need for oral hygiene and the ability to apply techniques in oral hygiene, which ultimately helps in maintaining good oral health.
